SharePoint 2010 at the Football Association

In 2009 The Football Association and Wembley National Stadium Ltd merged. This created a single IT department and a need to consolidate the two existing SharePoint platforms. Alongside this a Digital Media Programme was instigated by the new Chief Executive, Ian Watmore, which identified social networking as a key strategic element.

To manage the consolidation and provide a platform for corporate social networking The FA engaged Concentra to help develop a proof of concept using SharePoint 2010. The key objectives were to demonstrate:

Better ways to collaborate for remote workers
How the central office could provide better two way communication with the clubs using this platform
How to encourage sharing of knowledge and ideas
How to inform users of what was available on the portal in a number of different ways.

Approximately 50 people were involved in the proof of concept and the reaction so far has been very positive.

Concentra is delighted to announce that this proof of concept has been chosen by Microsoft as one of their case studies for the official SharePoint 2010 which took place on May 12th.

The 7 coolest things about SP2010

SharePoint 2010 is crammed full of new features. In this section we take a look at the best of the best.

1. The new UI

One of the first things you will notice about this new version of Sharepoint is the changes to the interface. Most visible of all is the ribbon - taken directly from Office 2007 and the immendient Office 2010. Alongside the ribbon sits in place web editing using Wiki style functionality, AJAX responsiveness, and a wide ranging use of model boxes.

2. Office Web Applications

SharePoint 2010 can host its own instance of the new Office Web Application suite. Now you can edit Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and OneNote files directly inside your portal, without requiring any client software. Not only do these web applications offer the familiar Office experience but Word and Onenote support simultaneous collabroation.

3. The new services

Excel services was extremely popular in the previous version of SharePoint. This functionality has been expanded in 2010, and joined by Performance Point Services and Visio Services. Performance Point Services brings the power to build sophisticated BI portal. Visio brings browser based rendering and powerful data binding. Combined these tools all SharePoint to unlock data like never before.

4. Multiple browser support

Finally SharePoint supports a wide range of browsers out of the box. Support is included for IE6 and 7, Firefox 3.x, and Safari 3.x

5. Accessibility

SharePoint now supports the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG 2.0) up to level AA. For those who were familiar with the previous version of SharePoint the removal of reliance on tables is a big step forward.

6. Workspace

A much improved version of Microsoft Groove, Workspace now allows you to take an entire SharePoint site offline. Once offline you can read and write to the site, and then sync all your changes back to the site. At last Microsoft has a workable solution to SharePoint on the road.

7. Enterprise metadata

SharePoint 2007 content types have now been joined in SP2010 with support for taxonomies. Taxonomies can be controlled top-down, allowing a company dictionary to be enforced for tagging, or implemented as more flexible folksonomies where any tags can be used.

Concentra and Metalogix form partnership to help customers manage their SharePoint environments more effectively

Concentra has formed a partnership with Metalogix to help new and existing clients manage their SharePoint deployments more effectively. Metalogix has developed a set of tools around three key areas: SharePoint content migration, content backup & restore and SharePoint migration between different versions of SharePoint.

How is this relevant to you and what do the tools deliver?

SharePoint 2010 Migration Software

One of the challenges many SharePoint users face is the migration to SharePoint 2010. Although the technical upgrade could be relatively simple, the challenge lies in migrating large amounts of content held in lists and libraries. Metalogix has been working closely with Microsoft to ensure that their products support the future of SharePoint and make the migration process as easy as possible. For those running on Beta or RC versions of SharePoint 2010 there is no upgrade path to the final release of SharePoint 2010 provided by Microsoft. Metalogix Migration Manager supports upgrades from Beta & RC as well as previous versions and other products.

Scenarios Metalogix will support:

  • Migration from SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Windows SharePoint Services v2 to SharePoint 2010
  • Migration from Office SharePoint Server 2007 and Windows SharePoint Services v3 to SharePoint 2010
  • Migration from existing Web Content Management Systems to publishing sites in SharePoint 2010
  • Migration from popular blogging platforms (WordPress, Blogger, Movable Type etc) to SharePoint 2010 blogs
  • Migration from MCMS to SharePoint 2010
  • Migration from EMC/Documentum eRoom to SharePoint 2010
  • Migration from Oracle Content Server (Stellent) to SharePoint 2010
  • Migration from Exchange Public Folders to SharePoint 2010
  • Migration from NTFS file shares to SharePoint 2010

SharePoint 2007 Migration Software

Metalogix's migration software can do more than one off migrations from different versions of SharePoint or other software. Dealing with redundant site structures, broken links, bloated content databases, and inconsistent navigation are all significant challenges. Removing redundant sites and content can prevent end-user confusion and orphaned data while reducing content database bloat. With Metalogix SharePoint Site Migration Manager, administrators can identify redundant sites and move relevant users, web parts, list and libraries to the appropriate location.

Empowering system administrators with SharePoint 2007 migration software from Metalogix allows for improved site content management and reduces the effort necessary to maintain system performance and utility. Metalogix SharePoint 2007 migration software can help your organisation effectively leverage the collaboration and publishing features that SharePoint provides.

SharePoint Content Backup & Restore

Microsoft SharePoint products are integral to the document management and collaboration environments at many organisations and SharePoint is often as critical to the business as email or phones. Many administrators find, however, that SharePoint’s integrated tools do not provide satisfactory enterprise restore capabilities. In addition, many discover that the built-in tools are inadequate for many restore scenarios and specifically lack common usage scenarios, such as item-level restore requests.

Metalogix's Selective Restore Manager Pro restores directly from backup files created by SQL, DPM, STSADM, or SharePoint Central Admin. This provides a great deal of deployment flexibility and allows it to be utilised quickly and easily in existing environments.
